Thanks XXXXX

I have been checking that all the Drobo Shares have been included in the privacy settings. On failure of a backup, however, these settings are sometimes un-set (if that is a word). I have checked again and that is the case. All Shares have once again been excluded from Spotlight through the privacy settings.

I'm sorry but I don't know what you mean "make sure this file is closed before beginning the backup"

Thanks again

Clarification response from Drobo Support indicated that the file should not be opened or used during the backup - particularly the one which is failing

03/09/2011 01:09 AM

I have just restarted the backups. The last one failed as already documented. Spotlight checked and Drobo excluded.

03/09/2011 02:10 AM

I just started the backup a short time ago and the Time Machine preferences shows that it has only 100MB still to back up. It was thus not a catastrophic failure last time such that I have to start from the beginning again. Fingers crossed - this time it will work.

The backup has been running for perhaps 9 hours now and it has transferred 1.2MB of 100.00MB according to the Time Machine preferences.

The log shows:

14 hours or so later it has backed up 15.8MB of 100MB. Lightning fast :-(

It hasn't move at all in the last 5 hours.

No new log entries.

Spotlight has been disabled from indexing Drobo and it is doing nothing.

Very little happening on the PowerMac according to Activity Monitor.

Advice would be much appreciated.

Best wishes

The backup was going nowhere and so I stopped it 5 minutes ago.

I then did a Full Reset of Time Machine as per Pondini at http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/A4.html

Time Machine has now restarted and is 'preparing'.

03/10/2011 02:19 PM

Time Machine is now Backing up: 0KB of 83.1MB according to Time Machine Preferences.

If this fails I don't know what to do next. Comments/help would be most appreciated.

I am at the point of feeling that the Time Machine/Drobo FS combination has some fundamental issue which manifests itself with larger backups. It may be a Mac G5 issue? There appears to be no problem with smaller backups from my MacBook Pro nor the Intel iMac. The large backup is however an issue which I am not resolving and after two months of contacting Drobo Support I have not been pointed to a solution. That is not intended to be critical but it is a fact.

On the Drobo website I see the following:

http://www.drobo.com/products/drobo-fs.php

"Seamless Integration with Apple Time Machine
The Drobo FS enables network backup for Mac users at home, home office or small offices. The Drobo FS delivers the most seamless support for Apple Time Machine of any network storage system on the market today. Using Time Machine with Drobo FS is as easy as clicking one box in the Drobo Dashboard software, with no need for confusing, complex command line work."

My two months of trouble and effort does not square with the above.

As you can see I am getting grumpy - but not personal. I appreciate any help I can get and thank you for the help provided already by a number of the Drobo Support Team.

Let us see what tomorrow brings.

Best wishes

Dear Support

I have just stopped the backup process again. It appeared not to be going anywhere. It was also not providing any useful information via the log. What information was being provided made me believe that it there would be no change from what happened before. It appeared to be in a stalled state.

I have also decided to give up trying to facilitate Time Machine to provide me with an initial Time Machine backup on the Drobo. I would not like to compute how many days of my time I have wasted on this system. I have to believe that there is a fundamental problem with the Time Machine/Drobo FS combination when used with the hardware/software system I have in place. Also, and regretfully, I have to say that I am somewhat disappointed by the level of support that DataRobotics has offered me.

Time Machine works perfectly on my Sonnet Fusion and so I have reinstated the Time Machine backup process on the Sonnet so that I can have a fully up-to-date backup. It is then my intention to try once more to get Time Machine and Drobo to work for me. I will do this by presenting Drobo with a complete backup from my Sonnet to act as a starting point for subsequent backups. I will be using the process as outlined at:
http://rolfje.wordpress.com/2010/12/30/move-time-machine-data-to-a-drobo...
Looks like my last hope.

I would very much like to believe that time Machine and Drobo can do a job for me. They have however tried my patience to the limit. As the former Chief Executive of BP, Tony Hayward, was once heard to say "I want my life back".

I will however write up my experience as objectively as I can for the interest of others.

Best wishes

Response from Drobo Support indicated that:
they had been undertaking some tests in-house and I that I had been patient. I was asked to send the Mac system logs that correlate with the date/time of the last hang so that they could be reviewed - to see if Drobo Support had missed something else.

Drobo Support apologised and offered once again to send me a replacement Drobo FS.
